- : Why not? They face a problem of not being able to use high density drives
- : in A4000ts and want a "plus" version of their A1200.. what would solve
- : the problem better then working on a new Paula chip only for the past few
- : months which will enable 16 bit audio and the the transfer rates to use a
- : HD floppy drive standard? They then could ship new A4000ts with off the
- : shelf HD drives along with A1200+s if they wish and all old Amigas could
- : upgrade their Paulas also generating more income. Don't forget these
- : machines are not being revealed until March and released afterwards, that
- : is still two to three months to finish the chip, test it and mass produce
- : it. They can then spend the rest of the year working on/finishing off
- : the new graphic chips which I am sure they are working on now also and
- : won't have to worry about the Paula chip, this will also be included on
- : the new Power Amiga also.
-
- I'd personally upgrade my A4000 to the new Paula chip if one was
- released. But wouldnt such a release be aimed solely at the lowend?
- Especially if the new high end Amigas will be PowerPC based and due by
- the end of the year (the PowerUp cards at least). Add CyberGfx, and
- support for third party sound cards through the OS, and the need for an
- upgraded Paula goes out the window (for high end systems anyway)
-
- And why develop one new chip (ie Paula) if the same amount of time, and
- money could be placed into software development of the OS to allow cards
- such as the Toccatta, (or PCI sound cards ??) to be used instead of the
- standard Amiga audio.
-
- Sure, Paula might still be needed to control the disk drives, but even
- then AT could just decide to lob the drive onto a card (SCSI ??) and go
- with that.
-
- After all, designing, testing and producing new chips is not easy, cheap
- or quick; and AT isnt exactly made of money..
-
- : Also don't forget in an interview at a press/developers conference a long
- : time ago it came from one of the higher ups that a new model will be
- : released in March with improved sound and graphics.. people seem to have
- : forgotten that!
